Mallorca (also known as Majorca) is located in the Mediterranean and is Spain’s largest island.  It has become one of the worlds to tourist destinations because of its beauty, its wonderful beaches and warm, dry summers.

The Isle of Skye in Scotland is a very popular tourist destination.  It is the largest island of the Inner Hebrides of Scotland – a group of islands off the west coast of the country.   It is a rugged island with a population of just under 9,000.  The islands population was decimated by clearances to make way for sheep in the 1800s.

My daughter goes to school year-round.  This makes it more difficult for us to plan long family vacations, but means I have more time to myself since I telecommute most of the time.  The point of this post is that while other schools are just starting up, she is right in the middle of a geography unit in her social studies class.  She came home last week all excited about the stuff she is learning.  She even brought home a map that the teacher had them fill out showing all the counties and major cities in our state.

I’m really not sure when geography became synonymous with cartography, but apparently that is what they are teaching school kids these days. She doesn’t seem to be learning anything about climate, topography, crops, industry, or the major exports of China like I learned in my geography classes.  She just spends hours staring at her new map of the United States and a bunch of Mexico maps that her mother had left over from a previous job assignment.  I asked her what she was looking at and she said she just loves to see where roads intersect and how many different ways there are to go between the same two places.

I guess it’s a start.  Maybe her curiosity will grow to more than just following lines and identifying rivers. Maybe she’ll start asking questions about the people, animals, and crops in the various places she’s investigating.  Then she’ll really be learning geography.

Recently, I was surprised to learn that in general tires are an important part of the fuel efficiency of your car. By keeping tires properly inflated, you can help improve your car’s gas mileage.  Look for gas stations around town that offer free air for tires – that can really help stretch the value of the dollar at the pump.

With gasoline prices at alarming peaks, I’m doing everything I can to maintain my car to improve gas mileage. For the most part, things like replacing the air filters are important for keeping the engine in good condition – so it keeps the car running well, in addition to improving how many miles I can travel per gallon.

Since checking the tire pressure regularly, I’ve noticed that two of my tires have to be inflated much more than the others. Neither one looks like a flat tire, but it’s likely that they are suffering from a slow leak somewhere. So, I’ve started checking out wheel and tire packages to see if I can find good deals on replacements. The search unearthed some really interesting products – especially these Toyo tires. With treads like that, you have to wonder what kind of vehicle would sport them.

U.S. stocks fell, capping a second monthly drop for the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index, after economic growth trailed forecasts, jobless claims rose to a five-year high and Exxon Mobil Corp.’s profit missed analysts’ estimates.

“The data put the market on notice that the economy is slowing,” said Quincy Krosby, who helps manage $380 billion as chief investment strategist at the Hartford in Hartford, Connecticut. “It’s not equity friendly.”

Caterpillar Inc., Boeing Co. and Walt Disney Co. led the retreat after the Commerce Department said the economy grew at a 1.9 percent rate last quarter and contracted at the end of 2007. Exxon Mobil fell, extending the worst monthly slump for S&P 500 energy companies since at least 1989, after declining production slowed earnings growth. The 2008 tennis season has already been filled with excitement. Rafael Nadal won the French Open for the 4th straight year and then he came back to win the Wimbledon just 2 weeks later. The upset against defending champ Roger Federer proved to be one of the best tennis matches in history.

The U.S. Open will be played immediately following the tennis portion of the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China. The U.S. Open tennis new coverage will most likely show yet another match between Nadal and Federer. But the Olympics will be especially interesting because of the closeness in schedule to the Olympics.

Many players will not get the rest they need and are used to getting in between tournaments. The injuries that were healing will be re-injured and many new injuries will be incurred. Beijing will be interesting to say the least this year.

It looks like Roger Federer is going to win the 2008 Wimbledon tennis tournament. This will be his sixth win and he’ll be able to keep Rafael Nadal from winning. Nadal won this year’s French Open and the French Open is the only Grand Slam tournament that Federer has not won. This is especially ironic because Federer grew up playing on the clay courts in Switzerland.

Nadal has been ranked number two longer than any player in history, as far as I know, and he would like nothing more than to bump Federer out of the coveted first ranked chair. I don’t think it will happen this season but Federer is aging and he will have to retire sometime. I know he wants to win the French Open so he has no regrets but I want him to retire while on top. If he keeps playing he might end up slipping and then he’ll go out in a whimper and not a bang.
