San Francisco’s Most Popular Tourist Attractions
Fisher Man’s Wharf in San Francisco is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the country. It is also the launching point for the city’s most famous attractions, which is the island of Alcatraz, which has enjoyed a notorious reputation throughout history. Meanwhile, the Wharf itself has numerous attractions, restaurants and shopping opportunities that allow people to base their entire visit in this area. Of course that might be too bad if it happens because San Francisco is such an amazingly beautiful city with so much to offer, it would be a shame not to see as much of it as possible.
However, if you’re gong to be spending some time in a San Francisco hotel or resort, you will definitely want to explore this standard attraction of the city. The Wharf is located along the northern waterfront area of San Francisco and stretches from approximately Van Ness Avenue, which is the location of Ghirardelli Square and Kearny Street, which is Pier 35. Some of the most popular features and attractions are the Wax Museum, Ripley’s Believe it or Not Museum and the Maritime National Historical Park, which is located on Pier 39. The area is also not for having some of the best clam chowder in the world and great dungeness crab chowder and other seafood dishes.
Alcatraz Island is about one and a half miles off the San Francisco shore in the bay. It is accessed by a ferry that departs at regularly scheduled times on Pier 33 at the Wharf. It was originally designated to serve as a lighthouse and military post. After its transition to a prison it was designed to be a military prison until it became the federal penitentiary, which was to give it so much notoriety. The prison housed some of the most famous and dangerous criminals in the country’s past including Al Capone, Doc Barker and Machine Gun Kelly. In 1963 Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy made the decision to close the doors of the prison forever due to the costs of operations, which far outweighed those of other federal prisons.

The only problem with Fisherman’s Wharf is that you are not always prepared for how cold it is in summer. Last time we had to buy sweatshirts for the kids. It is a great place but bring your sweater even if it is summer.
